Alicante in a Day from Jávea

The smaller, saltier city fix

If Valencia is the big city day out, Alicante is the compact alternative — smaller, more coastal in feel, and built around a hilltop castle with one of the best harbour views on this stretch of Spain. It's about an hour and a quarter down the motorway, comfortably doable there and back in a day, and works well as either a full day or a long, lazy evening.

Getting there

A straightforward motorway run south.

1. Join the AP-7 motorway south from Jávea.
2. Follow the AP-7 south past Benidorm towards Alicante.
3. Take the exit for the city centre or the port, depending which end you want first.
4. Park near the marina or on the edge of the old quarter and walk in from there.

Santa Bárbara castle

The Castillo de Santa Bárbara sits on Mount Benacantil, directly above the city, and the view from the top over the marina and the Mediterranean is the single best reason to make the trip. You can drive most of the way up or walk from the old quarter — either way, go for the view rather than the fortress itself, which is more atmospheric than dramatic.

The Explanada and the old quarter

The Explanada de España — Alicante's famous wave-patterned seafront promenade — is the city's signature stroll, lined with palm trees and café terraces that fill up through the evening. Behind it, the old quarter (El Barrio) climbs the hill towards the castle in a tangle of narrow streets, bars and small squares built for an evening rather than an afternoon rush.

The market and the harbour

Alicante's Mercado Central is a proper working produce market worth a wander even without buying anything, and the harbour itself — busier and more commercial than Jávea's — has its own working-port energy alongside the leisure boats. Between the castle, the Explanada and the market, Alicante gives you a genuine slice of city life in a package smaller and easier to manage than Valencia.

Where to eat

Alicante's old quarter is dense with tapas bars and small restaurants, particularly around the streets near the market and the base of the castle climb — good grazing territory for an evening rather than a single sit-down meal. The seafront and marina areas lean more towards views than culinary ambition, which is the usual trade-off with any harbourfront strip.

Best time to go

Alicante works well as either a day trip or an evening out, and the Explanada in particular is better after dark, when the promenade fills with an evening crowd and the heat of the day has eased. Spring and autumn suit a full day of walking between the castle and the old quarter; summer rewards timing the castle climb for morning or early evening rather than the midday heat.

With kids

The castle has enough ramparts, tunnels and views to hold children's attention, and the lift up (rather than the full walk) makes it manageable with younger legs. The Explanada is flat, wide and easy for buggies, with plenty of ice cream stops along the way — a good option if the rest of the day has involved more walking than small children are keen on.

The practical bits

Parking near the old quarter and castle can be tight, especially in summer evenings when the Explanada crowd builds — arrive earlier or use one of the marina-area car parks and walk in. The castle can be reached by lift from the old quarter as well as by road, which is worth knowing if the climb itself isn't appealing. As with any city-centre sight, check current opening hours for the castle before planning your visit around it.

How much time do you need?

Half a day covers the castle and the Explanada comfortably; a full day, or an evening added on, lets you take in the old quarter's bars and the market at a proper pace. It also works well paired with an Alicante airport transfer if you're dropping off or collecting visitors.
